The Littlewoods Building, Liverpool - 1938

 The Littlewoods Building, Liverpool

The Littlewoods Pools building on Edge Lane, Liverpool, was built in 1938, and due to its huge size was almost immediately requisitioned by the British government upon the outbreak of war in 1939.

Initially, the postal censorship department, then National Registration form printer before manufacturing floors for Halifax bombers and lastly; the war casualties department.

The building was returned to Littlewoods in 1946 and remained operational until its closure in 1994.

In 2018 a plan was announced to convert the building into a film and TV studio complex. Despite a serious fire later that year, work began, and two studios were opened in 2021. Ongoing work to expand studio capacity continues today.

My illustration returns the building to the days before government acquisition.
