Liverpool Philharmonic Hall - 1939

Right, let's try and class this joint up with some culture.

My new artwork is Liverpool Philharmonic Hall,

The current hall was designed by Herbert J. Rowse, a renowned Liverpool architect who also designed India Buildings and the Mersey Tunnel entrances. He chose a modern Art Deco style that contrasted with the classical style of the previous hall (1849), which was destroyed by fire in 1933.

The new hall was officially opened on June 29th, 1939, by Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent., with a splendid concert featuring works by Handel, Mozart, Elgar, and Walton, conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham. Tickets cost sixpence.

During World War II, the hall served as a refuge for Liverpool residents seeking respite from bombing raids.

Since then, the hall has hosted performances by some of the world’s most acclaimed musicians and conductors, such as Simon Rattle and Nigel Kennedy. It has also been the venue for many world premieres of works by composers such as Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Sir John Tavener and Michael Nyman.

It is a Grade II* listed building that is recognised as one of the finest concert halls in the United Kingdom and stands as an enduring symbol of cultural heritage in the city.
