Writing advice for the hyper-verbose

It always takes me forever to write anything. Articles, emails, WhatsApp messages - everything!

I agonise over meter and entendre. Reading and re-reading, even asking my computer to read my own words to me in multiple voices and at various speeds.

The one thing I cannot bear is to use the same word repeatedly in a sentence or passage (barring articles, prepositions, and conjunctions, obviously). It just seems sloppy when English is so rich with synonyms and analogues to suffer unnecessary reiteration.

It is due to this self-inflicted malady that I have become something of a hyper-verbalist. I often use multiple words instead of allowing myself the simple solution of duplication. I have learned to lean into this as it allows me to paint more detailed pictures with a broader pallet.

Reflecting on this naturally led me to my new motto for those similarly afflicted; “Never use the same word twice, where three or four will easily suffice”.

As ever, this design is available on all the usual gear.
